The city of Calabria, believed to be founded by Trajano or Theodozio, was the seat of the Diocese during the Visigoth empire, under Suebi rule. Although there are no historic records, it is presumed to have disappeared with the invasion of the Saracens, leaving only some traces of the walls. It stood at the top of the hill, on the slopes where this estate is located.
A rugged landscape, with the mystery of its underlying history, this is the terrain that gives us some of CARM’s great wines and best olive oils. The estate measures 49 hectares, planted in schist soils facing south/west and with altitudes between 150 and 280m.
The vineyards, occupying 14 hectares, were planted in the mid-1980s, with the grape varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. The olive and almond groves, populated with native varieties (the former with Madural and the latter with Casanova trees), are ancient and occupy areas of 10 and 21 hectares, respectively.

This was the estate chosen by CARM to build its olive oil mill and the new winery.
It features an impressive view overlooking the olive groves and vineyards of Almendra, considered the best land in the Upper Douro to produce high quality wines and olive oils.
With an area measuring 70 hectares, the estate has approximately 28 hectares of olive groves and 23 hectares of almond plantations, planted in schist terrains facing mostly northeast/south and with altitudes between 160 and 450 m. This land is populated with native varieties; Madural and Verdeal olive trees, and Casanova and Parada almond trees.

This estate is located on the cliffs of Ribeira de Aguiar, facing the bluffs where an ancient Roman stone quarry was located and where the golden eagle still nests. This is the base of the agricultural operation, which includes neighbouring properties and amounts to a total of 190 hectares, all comprised of schist soils with similar characteristics. The vineyards are at an average altitude of 320m, and their eastward exposure shields them from the region’s extreme climate conditions, enabling the production of grapes that give us aromatic, fresh and elegant wines. Altogether, there are approximately 14 hectares planted with the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinta Amarela varieties, as well as a small plot planted with a selection of clones of the most important international varietals. The olive groves are planted with the region’s native varieties Madural and Negrinha, almost all centenary, totalling an area of 107 hectares.
The estate’s former manor house features one of CARM’s oldest wineries, with stone vats, wooden presses and channels engraved in the stone, where the wine would drain under gravity to large casks where the must fortified. The Port wines produced here were then transported in ox carts to the Douro river, where they were transferred to Rabelo boats and shipped to Gaia.

Part of this Estate’s land lies on the left bank of the Douro, at the water’s smooth curve, in the village of São Cibrão. With an area measuring 45 hectares, there are 14 hectares of vineyards planted with the Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca grape varieties, 17 hectares of centenary olive groves and approximately 10 hectares of native almond trees; all planted in schist soils facing east, south and west, at altitudes between 125 and 270 m.
Near the vineyards, in Aldeia Nova, there are ruins of a Roman village, presumed to date back to the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D., where the remains of a winery are clearly visible (particularly two tanks lined with opus signinum, a waterproof mortar made from ceramic powder). According to recent archaeological research, it is believed that this site had intense occupation between the 3rd and 4th centuries. CARM’s vineyards were planted in rockier soils, making it necessary to bring earth from other estates to plant the rooted grafts.
